On September 8th of 2022, our new dive team participated in a diving class at Devils Fork State Park in Salem, SC. Around 11am, our divers observed a kayaker who had overturned. This kayaker surfaced and screamed help. Members from Laurens County EMS and the Laurens County Fire Service quickly swam to the kayaker to assist. The dive team successfully brought the distressed kayaker to the shore. After the rescue, it was learned that the kayaker was kayaking for the first time and was in a hurry and forgot his PFD. The kayaker was unable to swim as well. Thanks to the quick response of the members of the dive team, they were able to successfully and safely bring him to shore. This is a great start for the new dive team which will be implemented in the response plan in the coming months.
